Micromax subsidiary YU has gradually appraised with the launch of its new flagship smartphone, YU YUNICORN. They claim to overcome all the drawbacks of its previous toss Yuthopia, which heated up the talks in the news just before its launch but the poor performance of the phone spilled ice cold water on the expectations of the users.

This time the company has focused to improve its key areas i.e., software and services to penetrate and get fit into the more competitive market segment which belongs to the range of below INR 15,000/-. The launch price of Yunicorn is INR 12999/- for a month. Later it will be available for INR 14999/-.
So now it’s time to watch, how efficient is this mobile to compete with its foes?
Mobile Specifications:
– 32GB of internal storage which is expandable up to 128GB via micro SD card.
– 4GHz Octa-core MediaTek Helio P10 processor with 4GB of RAM.
– Packed with the 13-MP camera along with dual tone LED flashlight and a 5-MP front camera.
– 4000mAh non-removable battery.
– Magic sensors include 4g LTE fingerprint scanner, Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.
– Software: It runs on Android 5.1 lollipop.
– Display: 1080p Full HD resolution on 5.5-Inch screen.
– Protected with 2.5D Gorilla Glass.
– It has 3.5 mm audio jack and type-C USB port.
– The only missing things are NFC and FM radio.
The USP of YU is that it has inbuilt apps of cabs, online shopping, digital wallet, hotels, food and other services that too with their competitive prices on one screen.
Performance:
Pros:
– The phone doesn’t heat up while using. Just get slightly warm while charging and playing games.
– Works perfectly on 4G network.
– Supports full HD Videos fairly.
– Speaker volume is crisp.
– Picture quality is good if clicked in daylight.
Cons:
– The metallic back is little problematic as it makes the phone slippery, so there is a possibility it might slip off from hand.
– The edges around the object in focus aren’t very sharp in close-up shots.
– The biggest issue is the slow focusing system, even in daylight.
Battery backup:
Pros:
– The 4000mAh battery lasts approx. for 15 hours, when you play videos in a loop. But with normal use, the phone would last a day and a half and a bit more if you limit your gaming and 4G usage. So the overall battery life of the phone is very good.
Cons:
– Fast charging is grievously missing.
Appearance & Feel:
Pros:
– It looks fairly decent with its metal crafted body which is slightly brushed from the back.
– 5 inch, full-HD display results in sharp pictures and text quality.
– Smooth Touch experience.
– The screen has the protective glass, “NEG (Nippon Electric Glass)”.
– The quality of the accessories like data cable, earphones, and power adapter (10W) has definitely improved.
Cons:
– The phone is not very slim like latest A-line models and also a bit heavier but easy to hold and carry.
– Buttons are a bit stiff to press.
“Fantasy turned to reality”, though we cannot say this in case of Yunicorn. It’s very difficult for any mobile to be embellished with all the top features but still, Yunicorn is justifying its presence in this segment of mobile phones.
